Are you one of those that always thought that coupons were just for the supermarket or for a pharmacy? If so you’re not alone. Many think of coupons when they think of the Sunday newspaper, assuming that the only things they can save money on by using them are toothpaste and canned soup and items like these.
But in reality coupons are offered for a variety of products and services, if you just know where to look for them. Consider the Entertainment Book, which many people are very familiar with. It offers coupons for restaurants and casual dining, concert tickets, movie theaters, dry cleaning services, car washes, and even skiing lodges and resorts. The coupons might be for accommodations, lift tickets, or equipment rental. They also typically offer coupons for rental cars as well.
Some places online offer coupons for skiing at various lodges and resorts as well. These sites might be operated through the website of a particular state; by offering coupons they are encouraging tourism and business in their state. Or they may be offered through the lodge itself, such as for 10% or 25% off of lift tickets or park admission. Sometimes they are offered through a particular association that is centered on skiing itself as a sport or hobby.
You might think that coupons are a bit tacky and may shy away from using them but really there are several reasons why a lodge or resort or some other place may offer them and why you shouldn’t feel bad about using them. For one thing they know that if someone uses a coupon for accommodations or for lift tickets this means they’re going to get more business from that person for rental equipment, restaurant meals, and other items. If a state is offering coupons they are getting people to visit the area and are able to pour money into the economy not just because of the ski resort or lodge but because of surrounding hotels, restaurants, car rental agencies, and even airports that are located near larger attractions. And many resorts know that if they offer coupons then they’re more likely to get more visitors now and in the future.
Using the coupons is nothing shameful. If they weren’t meant to be used then they wouldn’t be offered. So don’t feel bad about searching them out and about redeeming them. The lodge is still going to make enough money and they will appreciate the fact that you’re interested enough in their location to use the coupons in the first place!

Have you ever heard of a youth hostel? In the U.S. they’re not very popular but in Europe and Asia they’re actually rather common.
A youth hostel is something like a dorm room that anyone can stay at for a small fee. They are usually separated by gender and feature rooms with bunk beds and community bathrooms like you might see in a gym.
The accommodations in youth hostels are of course a bit sparse; usually the beds just have a thin mattress and the visitor needs to provide their own linens and even a pillow, as well as their own toiletries and personal care items.
Using a community bathroom may not be everyone’s “cup of tea” but if you can use the shower in your gym and the restroom at an office building then keep in mind that it’s really not that much different.
Youth hostels are great for backpackers, bikers, and skiers who are visiting these exotic locations but don’t want to break the budget for accommodations for a week or two or even more. And if you’re in Europe or Asia or some country for the skiing then of course you won’t be spending that much time in your room anyway, will you?
To find youth hostels that might work well for you and your plans you can check the internet for different options. Most have photos posted so you can get a feel for what they look like inside.
Many are also considered very safe even though you’re sharing sleeping quarters. Usually they have lockers where you can store your personal items although you need to provide you own lock and most are separated by gender. Young people who don’t mind roughing it usually find such arrangements all they need to enjoy a good backpacking trip, biking trip, or skiing vacation when they’re overseas.
So if you need affordable accommodations then check out youth hostels. While they’re sparser in the U.S. they’re very common in Europe and Asia and may be just what you need to be able to afford that exotic and exciting vacation!

Do you think of camping as just being a summer activity? Many people do – it’s often a favorite for families when the kids are out of school and they can enjoy some fishing, hiking, horseback riding, boating, swimming, tubing, and all those other great activities that go along with camping.
There are many diehard campers that love to go winter camping. The landscape and scenery are both incredibly different when you’re winter camping, even if it’s in the same campground. A fresh blanket of snow and tiny icicles on the tree branches can be breathtaking, and an icy lake is sometimes even more beautiful than a beautiful blue one.
And avid skiers love winter camping as well. The accommodations are of course much more affordable than staying in a hotel or at the ski resort itself, and camping means that you can prepare your own meals which is also much more budget-friendly than a hotel. If you’re traveling with a group it’s usually easier to camp than for everyone to get their own separate rooms. And camping means that you’re probably right at the foot of the mountain or within walking distance to the resort so you save on a rental car or other transportation expenses.
Of course there are considerations and concerns when winter camping. You need to dress appropriately at all times including when you go to sleep. You need to be sure that the campground you’re looking at provides winter camping and their plumbing and everything will still be working! Winter campers need to use a propane stove rather than relying on a campfire since firewood is usually damp and can’t be relied upon.
But for those who take the extra steps to make sure they’re using the right gear and are staying in the right place, winter camping can mean being able to afford skiing just about anytime. Because campsites are usually just a few dollars for rental that means that just about anyone can afford them so you don’t need to worry about hotel rooms or expensive rooms in lodges. And on top of the skiing you can also go for sleigh rides, horseback rides, snowshoeing, and many other activities as well.
So if you’ve thought of camping as just a summer activity and love to ski, maybe it’s time to consider putting the two together. You can get some great landscape views, enjoy some amazing activities, and find that it’s just the perfect vacation you’ve been looking for.

Can you think of the best place to spend some quality family time together? A place where there’s activities for everyone regardless of age, where you get new scenery every time you visit, and where no one ever gets bored? And a bonus – where everyone gets fresh air and plenty of exercise as well?
If you guessed the ski slopes you’re absolutely right. Skiing is a great hobby for everyone in the family that’s old enough to walk and provides quality time spent outdoors.
Maybe you’ve never thought of skiing as being beneficial for everyone in the family or have thought of it as quality family time but it really is, for so many reasons. Consider a few of them here:
Skiing is a noncompetitive sport. Everyone can go at their own pace and shouldn’t feel pressure to perform or feel self-conscious about how well they’re doing, the way they might with other sports.
Skiing is a nonviolent sport, something that many parents are concerned with these days. There’s no contact with other players and children don’t learn to hit, push, or otherwise be aggressive.
You never get the same scenery twice when you’re skiing even if you go to the same resort over and over. As the sun sets and the snowfall changes, so does the landscape. Even slopes and trails with manmade snow present different challenges every time you visit.
Most ski resorts offer other activities as well as skiing and snowboarding, including sleigh rides, horseback riding, hiking, snowshoeing, and many others. This means that children who aren’t all that thrilled with skiing can usually find something else for them to do while everyone is at the resort or lodge.
Skiing is a great way for the entire family to spend time together while being outside and enjoying some fresh air and exercise. So if you’ve been trying to think of some ways to get quality family time together even during the long cold winter months then you might consider skiing. It’s beneficial for everyone in the family and something they can all do together.
